Beyond consumer and professional photography, Nikon designs and manufactures high-precision optical and industrial equipment, including semiconductor/FPD lithography systems, microscopes and healthcare imaging products, optical components, measurement systems, and digital-manufacturing equipment. Imaging Products remains Nikon's largest business by revenue, generating approximately ¥290B in FY2026, compared with ¥167B from Precision Equipment and ¥112B from Healthcare. The mechanical shutter can stick, fail to complete an exposure, or trigger an "Err" message, particularly on high-shutter-count DSLRs. Some D750 production runs had a documented shutter defect that could also cause partial image shading.
On Nikon DSLRs, the reflex mirror or its drive mechanism can become stuck or fail to return correctly. This can prevent shooting, produce an "Err" indication, or leave the viewfinder dark.
Dirty, worn, damaged, or poorly seated electrical contacts between the camera and lens can interrupt aperture, autofocus, or lens communication. Typical symptoms include autofocus failure, incorrect aperture information, or an "Err" message.
Nikon bodies can fail to recognize or reliably access a memory card because of a damaged card, connection problem, or card-slot fault. Symptoms include "No memory card," card-access errors, and an inability to save images.
Autofocus motors, drive components, sensors, or lens/body communication can fail and leave the camera unable to acquire or maintain focus. Depending on the model, the shutter may also refuse to release when focus cannot be established.
A deteriorated or incompatible battery, damaged contacts, or a fault in the camera's power circuitry can cause intermittent shutdowns, startup failures, flashing battery warnings, or abnormal operation. Nikon has also issued recalls for specific rechargeable battery production lots.
The image-stabilization mechanism can fail to provide its intended level of vibration reduction, resulting in reduced stabilization or unexpectedly blurred images. Nikon officially identified this hardware issue in certain Z 6 and Z 7 cameras.
Mechanical faults in the mount can prevent a lens from locking correctly or make it impossible to release an attached lens. Nikon issued service advisories for affected Z 8 cameras with lens-locking problems and Z 9 cameras with defective lens-release mechanisms.
Sensor-related or supporting-electronics faults can produce persistent bright spots, abnormal noise, lines, or other artifacts that remain across images. Nikon documented a bright-spot/noise issue affecting some D810 bodies, particularly during long exposures and certain image-area settings.
