GeerFab Audio repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

GeerFab Audio is a Milwaukee, Wisconsin-founded specialty audio electronics company and division of GeerFab LLC. Established as the audio division in 2017, it develops products aimed primarily at audiophile and high-resolution physical-media playback. The company is best known for its patented D.BOB Digital BreakOut Box, an interface that extracts stereo DSD64 and high-resolution PCM audio from the HDMI output of compatible SACD, Blu-ray Audio, and other universal disc players and routes it through S/PDIF coaxial or Toslink to an external DAC. The device is designed to let users bypass a player's internal DAC while maintaining HDCP/copy-protection compliance. The D.BOB received industry recognition as a nominee for the NAMM TEC Awards for Outstanding Technical Achievement. GeerFab's broader parent business also develops acoustic-treatment products, but those products belong to GeerFab Acoustics and should not be confused with the China-manufactured GeerFab Audio electronics line.

2 Most Seen Failures:

[No Audio Output / HDMI Handshake Failure]

[D.BOB can produce no audio when the HDMI/HDCP handshake does not initialize correctly, particularly when components are powered on in the wrong sequence. Power-cycling and starting the D.BOB before the player has been reported to restore operation.]

[DSD/DoP Detection Failure]

[Some D.BOB units or DAC combinations fail to maintain correct recognition of the DoP stream, causing the DAC to alternate between DSD and PCM or fail to decode DSD correctly. An early documented cause was an FPGA programming error that required factory reprogramming.]

[Clicks, Pops, or Ticks During Playback]

[Audible clicks, pops, or ticks can occur when playback starts, stops, or transitions between PCM and DSD. Reports also associate repeated ticking with synchronization or clock-domain mismatches that temporarily interrupt DoP detection.]

[Static or Bursts of Noise on DSD Playback]

[Soft static or noise can appear when an SACD or DSD stream initially starts. In reported cases, ejecting/reloading the disc or restarting playback clears the noise, after which the disc may play normally.]

[24-bit/192 kHz PCM Playback Failure]

[Some D.BOB system combinations fail to reproduce 24/192 PCM even though lower rates such as 24/96 and DSD64 operate normally. Reports indicate this is often DAC/input compatibility-related rather than a definitive D.BOB hardware defect.]

[DAC Compatibility / Synchronization Failure]

[Certain DACs fail to synchronize reliably with the D.BOB despite accepting the nominal S/PDIF or DoP format. Symptoms include no sound, unstable format detection, intermittent muting, or correct operation only after changing power-up or clock settings.]

[Clock Mismatch / Periodic Audio Dropouts]

[Clock differences between the HDMI source and an externally clocked DAC can cause input buffers to overflow or empty. This can drop or repeat samples, briefly break DoP detection, and produce periodic mutes, ticks, or format switching.]

[Player-Specific DSD/HDMI Compatibility Failure]

[D.BOB operation depends on the connected universal player supplying the required stereo DSD64 or high-resolution PCM over HDMI. Unsupported output modes, player configuration, or player-specific HDMI behavior can result in PCM conversion, glitches, or complete failure to obtain DSD.]

[Firmware / FPGA Programming Defect]

[Early D.BOB hardware was documented with an FPGA programming error that made its DoP output incompatible with stricter DAC implementations such as the Benchmark DAC3 HGC. At least some affected units required internal factory reprogramming rather than a normal rear-panel USB firmware update.]

1 Acme Revival offers repair, service, and part rebuild opportunities for most GeerFab Audio devices.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
  2. 2 Per information known, researched and collected by Acme Revival and its systems at time of page publishing (October 1, 2026).
