Garmin Ltd. is a global electronics and navigation technology manufacturer best known for GPS-enabled and sensor-based devices. The company designs, develops, manufactures, markets and distributes products spanning fitness, outdoor, aviation, marine and automotive OEM applications. Its portfolio includes GPS smartwatches and fitness wearables, cycling computers, handheld and outdoor navigation devices, aviation avionics, marine chartplotters and sonar systems, and automotive navigation/electronics. Garmin is particularly known for integrating GPS/GNSS positioning, navigation, communications and activity/health sensing into rugged purpose-built devices. The company follows a highly vertically integrated model, keeping substantial design, manufacturing, warehousing and related operations in-house. Garmin shipped more than 20 million products in 2025 and has delivered more than 300 million products since its inception.

2 Most Seen Failures:

Battery Drain / Battery Degradation

Garmin watches, cycling computers, handhelds, and other rechargeable devices can develop shortened runtime or unexpectedly rapid battery drain. Causes include battery aging, charging problems, intensive features, and occasionally software or firmware behavior.

Charging Contact / Charging Port Failure

Garmin devices may stop charging or charge intermittently because of contaminated, corroded, damaged, or worn charging contacts, pins, cables, or USB ports. Garmin specifically recommends inspecting charging interfaces for debris, corrosion, physical damage, and uneven pins.

Unresponsive or Stuck Buttons

Physical buttons on Garmin watches can become sticky, difficult to press, or completely unresponsive. Garmin identifies debris and deposits from exposure to salt water or chlorine as possible causes, and persistent cases can require device replacement.

Touchscreen Failure

Touchscreen-equipped Garmin watches, Edge cycling computers, and handheld GPS units can develop inaccurate, erratic, or completely unresponsive touch input. Some cases are recoverable through restart or calibration, while persistent failures may require replacement.

Freezing / Rebooting / Failure to Power On

Garmin hardware can freeze, become stuck during startup, repeatedly reboot, or appear completely dead. Garmin troubleshooting documentation covers these symptoms across wearable and fitness devices, with unresolved cases potentially indicating charging, battery, button, or hardware failure.

GPS Acquisition / Position Accuracy Failure

Garmin GPS hardware can experience slow or failed satellite acquisition, GPS drift, inaccurate tracks, or incorrect distance, speed, and pace measurements. Environmental obstruction and outdated or corrupted satellite-assistance data can contribute, although persistent abnormal behavior can also indicate a device problem.

Barometric Altimeter / Elevation Errors

Garmin watches and Edge computers equipped with barometric altimeters can report incorrect elevation or altitude changes. Blocked or contaminated sensor ports, environmental pressure changes, calibration problems, and sensor-related issues can cause inaccurate readings.

Optical Heart-Rate Sensor Errors

Garmin wearables can report missing, erratic, or inaccurate wrist heart-rate measurements, including cadence lock during exercise. Fit, movement, cold conditions, contamination of the optical sensor, tattoos, activity type, and sensor/software issues can all affect readings.

Battery Swelling / Overheating

Lithium-ion battery problems can in rare cases produce overheating or physical/safety-related failures in Garmin hardware. Garmin has issued historical recalls involving certain nüvi navigators and quatix watches for battery-related hazards, making this a documented hardware failure mode rather than merely a runtime complaint.

1 Acme Revival offers repair, service, and part rebuild opportunities for most Garmin devices.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
