Focal-JMlab SAS, commonly known as Focal, is a French premium audio and acoustics manufacturer founded in 1979. The company specializes in designing and manufacturing high-fidelity loudspeakers and speaker drivers, along with home cinema systems, architectural/in-wall speakers, headphones, automotive audio systems, professional studio monitors, outdoor speakers, and marine/yacht audio solutions. Focal is particularly known for its high-end loudspeaker technology, proprietary driver and diaphragm technologies, vertically integrated acoustic engineering, and French manufacturing. Its premium loudspeakers and drivers are manufactured in its Saint-Étienne-area facilities, while specialized high-end loudspeaker cabinetry is produced at its Bourbon-Lancy woodworking facility. Home audio has historically represented the largest portion of Focal's business, although the company also has substantial automotive, professional, headphone, and custom-installation product lines.
The foam or adhesive suspension around Focal/JMlab inverted-dome tweeters can deteriorate, detach, or disintegrate with age. Symptoms include buzzing, distorted treble, intermittent output, or complete tweeter failure.
The tweeter voice coil can burn open or become mechanically damaged, producing missing, weak, or distorted high frequencies. Excessive power or amplifier clipping is a documented cause, although individual driver failures can also occur.
Woofer and midrange voice coils can overheat, deform, or shift until they rub against the magnetic gap. Typical symptoms are scratching, crackling, buzzing, reduced output, or a completely silent driver.
Older Focal/JMlab drivers can develop hardened, cracked, torn, or otherwise deteriorated surrounds. This compromises cone control and commonly produces distorted bass, buzzing, reduced excursion, or loss of low-frequency performance.
Crossover resistors, capacitors, inductors, or their connections can fail from heat, age, electrical overload, or physical shock. The result may be loss of an entire frequency band, reduced output, or one or more apparently dead drivers.
Heat cycling and aging can produce cracked or unreliable solder joints and internal connections on crossover assemblies. These faults can cause intermittent drivers, distortion, channel imbalance, or complete loss of output.
Focal's inverted aluminum, titanium, and beryllium domes are vulnerable to dents, deformation, punctures, and other physical damage. Damage can cause altered or distorted treble and, when severe, require replacement of the diaphragm or complete tweeter.
Composite Focal cones can suffer deformation, impact damage, or separation of their layered construction, particularly on some sandwich-cone designs. The defect typically manifests as buzzing, distortion, abnormal cone movement, or reduced output.
Powered Focal/JMlab models can develop amplifier or power-supply faults, including failed switching devices and aging capacitors. Typical symptoms are failure to power on, intermittent operation, excessive noise, or a completely silent subwoofer/active speaker.
