F.J. Westcott Co repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

F.J. Westcott Co. is a U.S.-based designer and supplier of professional photographic and filmmaking lighting equipment. Its product portfolio centers on portable flash and strobe systems, LED/continuous lighting, light modifiers, softboxes, umbrellas, backdrops and related studio accessories used by photographers, filmmakers and content creators. The company traces its history to umbrella manufacturing beginning in 1899 and subsequently developed into a specialist in photographic light-control products. Westcott is particularly known for professional lighting and modifier systems, including its FJ wireless flash products, Flex Cine lighting, Ice Light LEDs and various softbox/modifier systems. The company says it has developed more than 700 products and holds 19 patents over its history.

2 Most Seen Failures:

[Flash/Strobe Fails to Fire]

FJ-series strobes and FJ80 speedlights may stop firing or fire intermittently even though the unit powers on. Reported causes include internal faults, overheating protection, firmware errors, wireless communication loss, and connection problems; persistent failure of the onboard test-fire function can require service.

[Battery Will Not Charge or Hold a Charge]

FJ200, FJ400-series, FJ80-series, and related battery-powered models can develop batteries that fail to charge, discharge rapidly, or no longer power the unit. Westcott notes that battery capacity deteriorates with charge cycles, temperature exposure, improper storage, and incorrect charging conditions.

[Unit Will Not Power On]

FJ strobes and speedlights can become completely unresponsive despite having a charged battery or external power source. Potential hardware-side causes include a failed battery/charger, power circuitry problems, and, on the FJ400-SE, a blown replaceable fuse.

[LCD or Touchscreen Failure]

The display can become dark, blank, frozen, or unresponsive while other portions of the unit still receive power. User reports include an FJ200 with a dark/freezing LCD and an FJ400 with a blank screen, while Westcott documents cases where the screen powers up but the unit does not respond normally.

[Hot-Shoe Contact / Connection Failure]

FJ80 speedlights and FJ triggers can lose electrical communication with the camera when their universal hot-shoe contacts do not align or seat correctly. Symptoms include failure to fire, intermittent triggering, loss of TTL/HSS functionality, and failure to recognize the selected camera system.

[Wireless Triggering / Communication Dropout]

FJ strobes can intermittently stop responding to an FJ trigger or host speedlight despite remaining powered on. Westcott identifies channel/group configuration, interference, distance, obstructions, mounting/contact problems, and firmware as major sources of wireless firing failures.

[High-Speed Sync Failure]

FJ200/FJ400-series strobes and FJ80-series speedlights can fail to enter or correctly execute HSS, producing synchronization problems at shutter speeds above normal flash sync. The failure is associated with host-unit communication, hot-shoe contact, firmware/compatibility problems, X-Sync configuration, and camera settings.

[Firmware Corruption / Control Lockup]

FJ hardware can behave abnormally after an incomplete, incorrect, or corrupted firmware installation. Documented symptoms include a powered display with otherwise nonresponsive controls, firing problems, and other unexplained operating faults that may require firmware reinstallation or a factory reset.

[Battery Mount / Mechanical Interface Failure]

The removable battery interface can develop mechanical problems that prevent the battery from seating, sliding into place, or reliably supplying power. A documented FJ400 user report describes a battery that could no longer slide onto the strobe, effectively leaving the unit unusable despite the electronics themselves not being identified as the initial failure.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
