Explore Scientific repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

End Use Segment

Explore Scientific is a consumer and enthusiast optical-instrument manufacturer and astronomy brand founded in 2008. It is best known for astronomical telescopes and premium wide-field eyepieces, while its broader portfolio includes computerized telescope mounts, binoculars, spotting scopes, microscopes, and STEM/scientific exploration equipment. Its telescope lineup spans refractors, Newtonians, Dobsonians, Maksutov-Cassegrains and specialized astrophotography-oriented optics, while its eyepieces range through several apparent-field series up to ultra-wide designs. The company combines U.S.-based product design, sales, distribution and light manufacturing with substantial optical-production resources in Asia through JOC, and it also distributes or markets products associated with brands such as Bresser, Explore One and National Geographic.

2 Most Seen Failures:

PMC-Eight Wi-Fi / Communication Failure

PMC-Eight controllers on EXOS-2, iEXOS-100, and G11 mounts may fail to establish or maintain communication with the controlling computer, tablet, or phone. Symptoms include failed connections, repeated disconnects, loss of position updates, and interrupted mount control.

Mount Motor Stalling / No Slewing

PMC-Eight-equipped mounts may power up normally but fail to move one or both axes, sometimes producing a ratcheting or abnormal motor sound. Excessive mechanical load, binding, drivetrain adjustment, motor connections, or stepper-drive problems can prevent normal RA or DEC movement.

Excessive Backlash / Gear Play

EXOS-2, iEXOS-100, and related equatorial mounts can develop excessive mechanical play in the RA or DEC drivetrain. The resulting backlash causes delayed direction changes, poor guiding, inaccurate GoTo positioning, and elongated stars during astrophotography.

High Periodic Tracking Error

G11 PMC-Eight and other equatorial mounts can exhibit excessive periodic or non-periodic tracking error from worm-gear alignment, mesh, drivetrain, or adjustment problems. The defect is most apparent during long-exposure astrophotography as repetitive guiding errors or elongated stars.

Focuser Binding / Rough Travel

Explore Scientific refractors can develop focusers that grab, jerk, slip, or become unusually stiff during travel. Reported cases include improperly adjusted or defective focusers that can scrape the drawtube and prevent smooth, precise focusing.

Focuser Slippage Under Load

Dual-speed focusers may lose their ability to hold position when supporting heavier diagonals, eyepieces, cameras, or imaging trains. The drawtube can slowly creep outward or suddenly shift focus because of insufficient tension or wear in the focusing mechanism.

Optical Misalignment / Collimation Error

Reflectors, Maksutov-Newtonians, and some refractor assemblies can suffer optical misalignment that produces soft, asymmetric, or distorted star images. Collimation can shift through transport, mechanical movement, or adjustment of the mirror/lens cell and requires realignment for full optical performance.

PMC-Eight Power / Controller Intermittency

PMC-Eight mount systems may experience intermittent operation, unexpected resets, or complete loss of motor control from power-input, cabling, connector, or controller-related faults. A controller restart may temporarily restore operation, while persistent cases require checking the power and electronics path.

Focuser / Diagonal Compression Ring Binding

Some Explore Scientific telescope focusers can have overly tight or malformed compression/pressure rings that make diagonals and other 2-inch equipment extremely difficult to insert or remove. Severe binding can damage the accessory barrel or place excessive stress on the focuser assembly.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
  2. 2 Per information known, researched and collected by Acme Revival and its systems at time of page publishing (September 29, 2026).
