Empress Effects repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

End Use Segment

Empress Effects Inc. is a Canadian boutique audio-electronics manufacturer founded in 2005 by electrical engineer Steve Bragg. The company designs and manufactures premium effects pedals and signal-processing hardware for guitarists, bassists, and other musicians, with a strong emphasis on studio-grade sound quality, extensive control, compact pedalboard-friendly designs, and innovative digital/analog processing. Its catalog has included compressors, parametric EQs, delays, reverbs, distortion pedals, tremolos, buffers, and more sophisticated programmable products such as the ZOIA modular effects platform and Echosystem delay. Empress is particularly known for products such as the Compressor, ParaEq, Reverb, Echosystem, Heavy, and ZOIA, and the company continues to design, assemble/manufacture, sell, and service its products from Canada.

2 Most Seen Failures:

ZOIA Button Pad Failure

Early Empress ZOIA units can develop intermittently responsive or completely nonfunctional grid, Shift, Page, and navigation buttons as the rubber/contact pad wears or fails. Empress has issued replacement button pads and published an official replacement procedure.

ZOIA Rotary Encoder Failure

The ZOIA rotary encoder can become erratic, unresponsive, skip values, or register fast rotations inaccurately. Reported units have required encoder replacement, sometimes alongside replacement of the button pad.

Reverb/Echosystem Noisy Input Jack

Some Empress Reverb and Echosystem units can produce crackling or intermittent noise at the input because slightly undersized 1/4-inch plugs move within the jack contacts. Empress documented a ring-to-sleeve jumper modification and states that later Echosystems were updated to correct the issue.

Bass Compressor LED Clicking Noise

First-run Empress Bass Compressor units can develop audible clicking associated with the LED/meter circuitry and internal ribbon connection. Empress specifically identifies early serial-number units and provides a ribbon-cable replacement procedure.

Power Input / Incorrect-Supply Failure

Empress pedals can malfunction, fail to start, or potentially sustain power-circuit damage when supplied with inadequate current, incorrect voltage, or reversed polarity. The discontinued Superdelay is particularly vulnerable to mistakes because it uniquely requires center-positive power while nearly all other Empress pedals are center-negative.

ZOIA SD Card / Boot Freezing

ZOIA units can hang during boot, firmware updates, or SD-card access when the card, filesystem, files, or SD interface do not operate correctly. Persistent cases have been associated with suspected SD-slot hardware faults, while other cases are resolved through formatting or firmware/card corrections.

Reverb/Echosystem Looper Loud-Noise Failure

The Reverb's firmware-based looper has a documented issue in which operation can generate unexpectedly loud noises or otherwise fail to function correctly. Empress identifies this as a known issue and recommends confirming the looper and SD-card setup while firmware fixes are developed.

Early Superdelay Bypass Tempo Bug

Early-production Superdelay pedals can change the stored delay tempo after the pedal is bypassed and then re-engaged. Empress identifies this as a firmware defect affecting early serial-number units and indicates that a firmware update is required.

Loose or Drifting Control Knobs

Empress pedal knobs can loosen on their shafts or turn too easily, allowing settings to change accidentally during transport or performance. The manufacturer recommends retightening the knob set screw and, where necessary, lowering the knob or adding friction beneath it.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
