Dreadbox repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

Dreadbox is a Greek boutique electronic-musical-instrument manufacturer founded in Athens in 2012 by Yiannis Diakoumakos and Dimitra Manthou. The company grew out of DIY effects and synthesizer experimentation and specializes in analog and hybrid synthesizers, semi-modular desktop synths, Eurorack modules, effects pedals, and sound-processing hardware. It is particularly known for compact analog instruments such as the Erebus, Hades, Nyx, Typhon, Nymphes, and Artemis, with a characteristic warm analog sound, distinctive colorful industrial design, extensive modulation/CV functionality, and comparatively accessible pricing. Unlike many music-electronics brands that outsource complete production, Dreadbox maintains a hands-on manufacturing model in Athens, performing final production, assembly, testing, and quality control locally.

2 Most Seen Failures:

USB Power / Ground-Loop Noise

Typhon and Nymphes commonly exhibit hum, hiss, digital interference, or other unwanted noise when USB-powered from a computer or shared power source. Poor USB cables, grounding paths, and power adapters are frequent contributors, with separate power or USB power/data isolation often resolving the problem.

Power Supply / Failure to Boot

Nymphes and other Dreadbox hardware may fail to boot, behave erratically, or produce abnormal audio when supplied with inadequate or unstable power. Dreadbox specifically documents bad USB adapters and cables as causes of startup failure, unstable oscillators, noise, and failed firmware updates.

USB / Computer Connectivity Failure

Typhon owners frequently report USB detection problems, interrupted preset transfers, firmware-update connection errors, and failures to establish MIDI or USB-audio communication. Problems can originate from firmware, USB drivers, cables, hubs, or the synth's USB connection.

Firmware Freezing / Unresponsive Operation

Typhon and Nymphes can become unresponsive, stop producing sound, or freeze during particular MIDI, preset, or firmware interactions. Firmware revisions have addressed some behaviors, although compatibility problems with particular MIDI devices or software configurations continue to be reported.

Oscillator Tuning / Voice Instability

Analog voices can become noticeably detuned, unstable, or inconsistent between voices, particularly when power quality or calibration is poor. Nymphes includes an autotune procedure, while older polyphonic models such as Abyss also provide voice-calibration procedures.

Dead or Missing Voice

Polyphonic Dreadbox models can develop an individual voice that produces little or no audio while the remaining voices continue operating. Reports involving Abyss show that internal interconnect/ribbon connections can cause an apparently dead oscillator voice, although analog voice circuitry can also require diagnosis.

No Audio / Intermittent Audio Output

Units may power normally yet produce no sound, severely reduced output, or intermittent audio. Troubleshooting typically involves the analog signal path, output circuitry, MIDI triggering, power integrity, internal connections, and calibration before assuming a failed oscillator or output stage.

Noisy / Clicking Envelope Behavior

Nymphes in particular has generated recurring reports of audible clicks or envelope-related noise when notes trigger, especially at very fast attack settings. Firmware revisions reduced some envelope behavior, but owners have continued to report audible envelope artifacts on certain units.

Worn or Intermittent Controls / Connectors

Potentiometers, sliders, encoders, buttons, USB sockets, audio jacks, and internal connectors can develop intermittent operation or mechanical connection faults with age and use. Symptoms include parameters jumping or failing to respond, intermittent power/data connections, audio dropouts, and controls that no longer track correctly.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
