Double Robotics repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

Double Robotics is a California robotics OEM specializing in mobile telepresence robots that allow remote users to move through workplaces, schools, healthcare facilities, and other environments while communicating through live video. Founded in 2012 by David Cann and Marc DeVidts, the company became particularly well known for its original Double concept—essentially combining an iPad-based video conferencing system with a remotely controlled, self-balancing mobile platform. Later generations culminated in the Double 3, which incorporated its own display, wide-angle cameras, 3D depth sensors, obstacle avoidance, and assisted navigation rather than relying on an iPad. The company markets its systems primarily for hybrid/remote work, education, healthcare and enterprise telepresence. Double Robotics reported selling more than 8,000 robots and generating over $20M in cumulative sales by early 2017, illustrating the substantial early adoption of its telepresence platform.

2 Most Seen Failures:

Battery Degradation / Failure to Hold Charge

The internal lithium-ion battery may lose capacity with age, resulting in short runtime, unexpected shutdowns, failure to power on, or inability to complete charging. Battery-related faults are especially relevant to older Double and Double 2 units that have accumulated years of charge cycles.

Charging Dock / Charging Contact Failure

The robot may fail to charge when docked because of worn or contaminated contacts, poor dock alignment, damaged charging hardware, or faults in the base charging circuit. Symptoms include no charging indication, intermittent charging, or a robot that only charges when connected directly to its power adapter.

Bluetooth / Base Communication Failure

Double and Double 2 depend on Bluetooth communication between the iPad and robot base, and pairing or communication failures can leave the robot unable to drive or respond correctly. Problems can originate from pairing state, the Bluetooth radio, firmware, or communication electronics inside the base.

Drive Motor / Wheel Encoder Failure

Wear or failure of the two drive motors, wheel assemblies, or high-resolution wheel encoders can cause weak propulsion, uneven movement, jerking, incorrect turning, or complete loss of movement. Encoder faults can also interfere with the feedback required for accurate motion and self-balancing.

Self-Balancing / IMU Failure

Failures involving the inertial measurement system, motor feedback, or balancing electronics can prevent the robot from standing correctly on its two wheels. Affected units may oscillate, lean abnormally, immediately deploy their kickstands, or refuse to enter balancing mode.

Motorized Height Adjustment Failure

The powered telescoping-height mechanism can become stuck, operate intermittently, make abnormal mechanical noises, or stop raising/lowering the display assembly. Likely hardware causes include the height motor, mechanical drive components, position feedback, wiring, or associated control electronics.

Camera / Pan-Tilt-Zoom Failure

Double 3's dual-camera PTZ assembly can develop loss of video, failed camera detection, inability to tilt, abnormal image output, or intermittent operation. The system contains two 13-megapixel cameras and a motorized viewing mechanism, making the camera module and its internal connections significant repair points.

Depth / Obstacle Sensor Failure

Double 3 relies on Intel RealSense stereo depth modules and ultrasonic sensors for obstacle detection and Click-to-Drive navigation. Sensor malfunction, misalignment, contamination, or degraded depth perception can cause missing navigation targets, unreliable obstacle detection, unexpected stopping, or autonomous-driving errors.

Display / Double 3 Head Electronics Failure

Failure of the integrated Double 3 head can produce a blank or frozen touchscreen, boot failure, base-not-detected errors, loss of Wi-Fi, or failure of cameras and other head peripherals. The head contains the LCD, Jetson TX2 computing module, wireless hardware, cameras, sensors, and supporting electronics, so power or board-level faults can disable multiple functions simultaneously.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
