Halogen and HMI lamps can fail to ignite, shut down after warming up, or produce unstable output as they age. Cracked glass, blackened envelopes, oxidized contacts, or a lamp reaching the end of its service life are documented causes.
Repeated bending, sharp kinks, crushing, or other cable damage can break internal conductors and interrupt power between the ballast and light head. Damaged insulation and connectors can also create intermittent operation or complete loss of output.
Electronic ballasts and power supplies can fail because of internal short circuits or other component faults, leaving the fixture unable to power or start. Some models protect themselves by refusing to switch on when an electrical fault is detected.
Blocked ventilation, high ambient temperature, direct sunlight, or inadequate cooling can cause the ballast or LED fixture to overheat. Thermal protection may then shut the unit down until its temperature returns to a safe level.
A failed, obstructed, or contaminated cooling fan can prevent adequate airflow through actively cooled models. The resulting temperature rise can trigger an overheat warning and automatic shutdown.
Damaged sockets, poor contacts, oxidation, or an incorrectly seated lamp can prevent ignition or cause unreliable operation. Improper lamp installation can also damage both the lamp and socket.
HMI models can fail to strike when the ignitor, ignition cable, or associated socket circuitry becomes defective. The fixture may indicate an ignition fault even though the ballast itself remains powered.
A defective mains cable, damaged connection, blown input protection, or abnormal supply voltage can leave the fixture completely unpowered. Excessive voltage, voltage spikes, or large input fluctuations can also cause the ballast to refuse startup or shut down.
Loose or incompletely locked head-cable connectors can interrupt the fixture's safety loop and prevent operation. On applicable HMI models, an improperly closed light-head door or cover produces the same no-ready/no-start condition.
