Datacolor AG is a Swiss color-management technology manufacturer specializing in instruments, software, and services used to measure, formulate, communicate, calibrate, and control color. Its hardware portfolio is centered on precision color-measurement devices such as spectrophotometers, alongside color-matching and quality-control software and consumer/professional display and imaging calibration products. Datacolor serves industries including textiles and apparel, paints and coatings, plastics, automotive, print and packaging, photography, and videography. Founded in Switzerland in 1970, the company has built its reputation around precise and repeatable digital color measurement and management, with its Suzhou, China operation serving as its manufacturing facility.
The instrument fails calibration or reports invalid calibration, preventing measurements or producing incorrect color readings. Common triggers include contaminated or damaged calibration standards, incorrect calibration setup, or instrument drift.
The hardware is not detected by the computer or loses communication during operation. Direct USB connection, adequate USB power, compatible drivers/software, and intact cables are frequent troubleshooting points.
The instrument rejects the white reference or produces unreliable calibration because the white tile is dirty, scratched, aged, damaged, mismatched to the instrument, or its calibration data is missing. Older Datacolor instruments can specifically report missing white-tile data.
The green diagnostic/control tile measurement falls outside its expected tolerance and calibration or diagnostic checks fail. Contamination, scratches, aperture mismatch, or an instrument requiring service can produce this condition.
The spectrophotometer fails the black-reference stage or reports a "Wrong black trap" condition. Dirt or debris in the black trap, incorrect positioning, aperture-recognition problems, or loss of instrument communication can cause the error.
The instrument is configured for a different aperture than the one physically installed, resulting in failed calibration or erroneous measurements. Some models require separate calibration for each aperture, while incorrect Autozoom/aperture recognition can also generate errors.
Repeated measurements increasingly disagree or the instrument fails control-measurement tolerances. Temperature changes, aging light-source or detector components, contamination, calibration drift, and overdue maintenance are documented contributors.
Portable models such as ColorReader and Check-series instruments may fail to establish or maintain communication with their companion application or computer. The symptom typically appears as a device that cannot be found, synchronized, or connected despite powering on normally.
Portable instruments can become unusable or unreliable when their rechargeable battery no longer provides adequate operating time or power. Battery-dependent models such as Check-series instruments require charging and, where the battery is not user-serviceable, replacement through an authorized service facility.
