Cobalt Digital repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

Cobalt Digital, Inc. is a privately held American professional broadcast and video-infrastructure equipment manufacturer founded in 1997 and based in Champaign, Illinois. The company designs and manufactures hardware and software used in broadcast television, live production, content distribution, and professional AV systems, specializing in video/audio signal processing and transport. Its portfolio includes openGear cards and frames, video and audio processors, frame synchronizers, format converters, encoders and decoders, multiviewers, routers, distribution amplifiers, fiber-optic transport equipment, audio monitors, control panels, ST 2110/IPMX interfaces, and standalone/mini converters. Cobalt is particularly known as a founding partner of the openGear initiative and for high-density modular broadcast infrastructure supporting SDI, IP, UHD/4K, HDR, RIST/SRT and SMPTE ST 2110 workflows. Current major product families include PACIFIC compression systems, SAPPHIRE converters, WAVE routers/control panels, ARIA audio products, UltraBlue multiviewers, blueCORE processors, and its extensive openGear range.

2 Most Seen Failures:

Startup / Boot Failure

Cobalt openGear cards and corresponding BBG units may fail to initialize during startup or reset, particularly after long periods of operation and as the hardware ages. Cobalt traced this behavior to a boot-sequence error and released an essential bootloader update for numerous 9501–9980-series products.

Power Supply Failure

Frames or standalone units may exhibit no power, intermittent operation, or cards that fail to initialize because of a failed or poorly seated power supply. Cobalt troubleshooting procedures specifically direct technicians to verify frame power indicators, reseat supplies, and substitute a known-good power supply.

Intermittent Card / Module Failure

openGear cards may intermittently reset, disappear, lose functionality, or otherwise operate unpredictably because of card, frame, connector, or hardware faults. Cobalt recommends reseating the card, checking rear-I/O connections and moving the suspect module to another slot or frame to isolate the failure.

SDI Input / Signal Lock Failure

Converters, frame synchronizers, embedders and other Cobalt processing cards may stop detecting or locking to an SDI/video input, resulting in missing or unusable output. Common fault areas include the input receiver/equalizer circuitry, BNC/rear-I/O connection, signal-format compatibility, or the processing card itself.

Missing / Corrupted Video Output

A Cobalt card may power normally and detect an input while producing no video, incorrect video, or an unstable output. Troubleshooting centers on verifying configuration, output signal paths, rear-I/O connections and substituting a known-good module to determine whether the processing/output circuitry has failed.

DashBoard / Network Communication Failure

Cards or frames may disappear from DashBoard or become impossible to remotely monitor and control because Ethernet or control communication has failed. Cobalt identifies cabling, incorrect IP configuration, DHCP problems, frame/card communication faults and defective hardware among the areas to investigate.

Audio Embed / De-Embed Failure

Audio-processing Cobalt modules may pass video while producing missing, incorrectly routed, distorted, or otherwise unusable embedded, AES, analog, MADI or Dante audio. Likely fault areas include audio I/O circuitry, rear-module connections, channel-routing configuration, synchronization and the card's audio-processing section.

Reference / Frame-Synchronizer Lock Failure

Frame synchronizer and processing cards may report reference errors or fail to produce stable synchronized video when they cannot lock to the external reference. Cobalt documentation specifically identifies incorrect REF1/REF2 selection, missing or improperly terminated reference signals and associated synchronization faults as causes.

Ethernet Link / Streaming Interface Failure

Cobalt encoders, decoders, gateways and network-equipped cards may lose Ethernet link or stop transmitting or receiving IP media even though the unit remains powered. Troubleshooting includes checking physical link/activity status, network configuration and cabling before isolating a possible Ethernet-interface or card-level hardware fault.

1 Acme Revival offers repair, service, and part rebuild opportunities for most Cobalt Digital devices.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
