Cerwin-Vega repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

Cerwin-Vega is an American high-performance audio manufacturer founded in 1954 by aerospace engineer Gene Czerwinski. The company built its reputation around high-efficiency loudspeakers capable of unusually high sound-pressure levels and powerful low-frequency reproduction, becoming particularly associated with large woofers, subwoofers and its recognizable red-surround speaker drivers. Its historical innovations include an early solid-state amplifier, high-output 18-inch loudspeakers and the bass systems used for Universal's Sensurround cinema technology in the 1970s. Today, Cerwin-Vega produces equipment spanning professional/live sound, home hi-fi and theater, automotive/mobile, marine and powersports applications, including powered and passive loudspeakers, subwoofers, line-array systems, amplifiers, studio monitors and portable speakers. The brand is especially known for high-output, bass-heavy loudspeaker systems designed for efficiency, durability and strong dynamic impact.

2 Most Seen Failures:

Woofer Foam Surround Deterioration

The foam suspension surrounding the woofer cone cracks, crumbles, or completely separates with age, especially on vintage Cerwin-Vega D-, E-, R- and similar large-woofer models. This causes weak or distorted bass, rattling, excessive cone movement, and eventually requires the woofer to be refoamed.

Powered Subwoofer Amplifier Failure

The internal plate amplifier in powered Cerwin-Vega subwoofers can stop producing output because of failed power-supply, output-stage, capacitor, or protection circuitry. Typical symptoms include a powered unit with no bass output, intermittent operation, blown fuses, or an amplifier that remains in standby/protection.

Amplifier Overheating / Thermal Protection Shutdown

Powered speakers and subwoofers can lose audio after extended high-output operation when the amplifier overheats and enters thermal protection. Repeated shutdowns can indicate inadequate cooling or developing faults in the amplifier or power-supply circuitry.

Blown Woofer Voice Coil

Sustained high-power operation or amplifier clipping can overheat and damage the woofer voice coil. The affected driver may become silent, distorted, scratch during cone movement, or exhibit an open/abnormal voice-coil resistance.

Tweeter Failure / Loss of High-Frequency Output

Tweeters can fail from excessive power, clipping, damaged diaphragms or voice coils, or faults in the crossover network. The speaker continues producing midrange and bass but sounds unusually dull because high-frequency output is weak or completely absent.

Crossover Component Failure

Aged capacitors, overheated resistors, damaged inductors, or cracked connections in the passive crossover can cause individual drivers to become weak, intermittent, distorted, or silent. Older high-power Cerwin-Vega cabinets are particularly susceptible to heat-stressed crossover components and deteriorated capacitors.

Fuse Blowing / Open Protection Fuse

High-level operation, overload conditions, or a defective driver can open the protection fuse used in several Cerwin-Vega loudspeaker models. The resulting symptom is usually complete or partial loss of speaker output, and repeatedly blown replacement fuses generally indicate an underlying driver or crossover fault.

Hum / Buzz From Powered Speaker or Subwoofer

Powered Cerwin-Vega systems can develop persistent 50/60-Hz hum, buzzing, or crackling associated with grounding, aging amplifier electronics, power-supply filtering, or input-stage problems. A hum that remains with the audio input disconnected generally warrants inspection of the amplifier and power-supply section.

Bass Distortion / Woofer Bottoming

Large Cerwin-Vega woofers can produce popping, rapping, or severe distortion when driven beyond their mechanical excursion or when the amplifier reaches its output limit. Persistent distortion at moderate levels can instead indicate a damaged surround, partially failed voice coil, loose suspension, crossover fault, or failing amplifier.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
