CEDAR Audio repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

CEDAR Audio Ltd is a British specialist manufacturer and developer of professional audio restoration, dialogue noise suppression, speech enhancement, audio-forensics, and surveillance-audio technology. Originating from digital audio-restoration research associated with Cambridge University and the British Library National Sound Archive, CEDAR became an early pioneer of real-time digital audio restoration and hardware-based restoration processors. Its product portfolio now spans dedicated hardware such as the DNS 2, DNS 4, DNS 8D/DNS 8S and SE 1, the modular CEDAR Cambridge restoration/forensic platform, and professional software and plug-ins including DNS, VoicEX, Retouch, Decrackle, Declick and related processing tools. CEDAR equipment and software are used in film and television production, broadcast, location sound, mastering, archives and libraries, law enforcement, security, surveillance and forensic audio. The company is particularly known for its Dialogue Noise Suppression (DNS) technology and its long history of innovations in digital noise reduction and audio restoration; its work has received an Academy Award, an Emmy and Cinema Audio Society awards.

2 Most Seen Failures:

Power Supply / No-Power Failure

CEDAR rackmount processors can develop PSU, internal power-rail, connector, or power-input faults resulting in a completely dead unit, intermittent startup, spontaneous rebooting, or operation from one power source but not another. DNS models commonly incorporate both mains and external DC power circuitry, making the power section a primary hardware troubleshooting area.

OLED/LCD Display Failure or Dimming

Front-panel displays can become dim, uneven, intermittent, blank, or difficult to read as they age. Display longevity is particularly relevant to the DNS 8D, for which CEDAR introduced newer white OLED displays beginning with serial number 15020.

Front-Panel Button / Encoder Failure

Frequently operated buttons, rotary encoders, and associated front-panel electronics can develop intermittent response, missed movements, erratic parameter changes, or complete loss of control. DNS hardware relies heavily on encoders, soft keys, power/lock controls, and other physical controls, so wear or front-panel PCB faults can significantly impair operation.

Ethernet / Network Control Failure

DNS 8D and other network-capable CEDAR hardware can exhibit loss of Ethernet communication, inability to access browser-based control or firmware pages, or failure to obtain/respond at the expected network address. Likely hardware causes include the Ethernet jack, magnetics, network-controller circuitry, damaged connectors, or associated PCB faults.

Dante / Digital Audio Interface Failure

On DNS 8D hardware, Dante or AES3 interface problems can present as missing channels, loss of synchronization, no digital audio, or an otherwise functioning processor that cannot communicate correctly with the digital audio network. Troubleshooting typically separates network/Dante circuitry, clocking, AES3 I/O, firmware, and external cabling before implicating the main processing board.

Mainboard / Processor Failure

CEDAR Cambridge systems and standalone digital processors depend heavily on their motherboard or DSP/main-processing electronics, and failure can produce boot problems, crashes, freezes, corrupted operation, or audio-processing faults. CEDAR documented a specific Cambridge Series III motherboard/BIOS compatibility problem on systems using the Supermicro X7DAL-E+ and Xeon E5420 that could introduce occasional clicks into real-time audio.

Firmware Corruption / Failed Boot

CEDAR DNS hardware may fail to boot normally or operate correctly following corrupted firmware, an interrupted update, or incompatible firmware data. DNS 8D documentation includes a firmware recovery/update procedure requiring a true mains power cycle after programming rather than simply shutting down from the front panel.

Audio I/O / No Signal Failure

Analogue, AES3, or other audio-interface circuitry can fail so that one or more channels have no input/output, intermittent audio, distortion, incorrect level, or synchronization problems while the rest of the unit remains operational. Common hardware suspects include connector solder joints, input/output drivers and receivers, converters, relays, clock circuitry, and the associated I/O PCB.

Relay / Fail-Safe Bypass Failure

DNS 8 Live and DNS 8D units use hardware relays to connect inputs directly to outputs during a power failure or significant system disruption, making these relays part of the critical audio path. Aging or damaged relays and their driver circuitry can cause intermittent channels, failure to switch between processed and bypass audio, or loss/distortion of the signal path.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
