Canton Elektronik GmbH + Co. KG is a German, family-owned manufacturer specializing in premium loudspeakers and home audio equipment. Founded in 1972, the company develops and manufactures products including floor-standing and bookshelf speakers, home-theater/surround systems, subwoofers, built-in architectural speakers, soundbars, active and wireless smart speakers, and associated Hi-Fi components. Canton is particularly known for high-quality German-engineered loudspeakers and its premium Reference, Vento and Townus ranges. Most production takes place in Weilrod, Germany, where its higher-end loudspeakers are fully manufactured, while its Czech facility near Tachov manufactures drivers, crossovers, wiring and other components as well as selected entry-level speaker ranges. Canton employs roughly 120 people across its facilities and exports to more than 50 countries.
Active Canton subwoofers may fail to wake from standby, switch on intermittently, or produce very low/distorted output. Repair reports particularly identify failure of the signal-detection/standby circuitry in older Canton active subwoofers.
The tweeter can become completely silent, leaving the speaker sounding dull or muddy. This failure is repeatedly reported on older Canton Karat, Ergo, Fonum and related passive loudspeaker models.
Bipolar capacitors in the passive crossover can deteriorate, open, or physically fail, resulting in missing drivers or severely altered frequency response. Documented Canton cases include capacitors failing badly enough to leave the woofer section inoperative.
The internal amplifier electronics of powered Canton subwoofers can fail, causing no output, weak output, distortion, or complete loss of power. The amplifier and associated low-voltage/input electronics are notable repair points in aging active-subwoofer models.
An internal microfuse can open and leave an active subwoofer completely inoperative even when mains power is present. Canton specifically lists a blown microfuse among the causes of a subwoofer that will not turn on.
One or more bass drivers can stop producing sound while the tweeter continues operating. Reports across Canton passive speakers show that the underlying fault may reside in the driver, crossover, or associated internal connection.
High playback levels or overload can overheat crossover components, including inductors and surrounding parts. Severe cases show melted or heat-damaged crossover components and can coincide with damage to midrange or high-frequency drivers.
Active subwoofers can develop continuous mains-frequency hum or buzz, sometimes sufficiently strong to interfere with normal standby operation. Canton identifies ground loops, defective or inadequately shielded signal cables, and mains interference as common causes.
Some electronically controlled Canton subwoofers can stop responding to their remote control because of a depleted remote battery or loss of synchronization between the remote and subwoofer. Canton documentation describes re-pairing the remote and subwoofer as the corrective procedure.
