Camera Motion Research, LLC is a small Raleigh-based manufacturer and supplier of specialized equipment for professional filmmakers and videographers. The company developed camera-motion and stabilization products, most notably its Blackbird handheld camera stabilizer, designed for smooth shooting with DSLRs and camcorders, and it holds intellectual property relating to optical-equipment stabilization. CMR subsequently expanded into professional wireless-video solutions and supporting hardware, including Radian wireless HD systems, CamLink/BackBone mounting and battery solutions, HDMI and power cables, battery cages, adapters, chargers, and accessories for systems such as Amimon Connex and Teradek. Its product catalog is therefore centered on camera stabilization, wireless video transmission, mounting, power, and connectivity equipment for professional video production.
Radian/Connex-family wireless video systems can experience sporadic or seemingly random picture breakup during operation. Professional users report that power-cycling the affected wireless system can restore operation.
Wireless video performance can deteriorate in environments containing substantial competing RF traffic. Interference may cause unstable reception, reduced usable range, or interruptions to the video feed.
Radian transmitters connected directly to a camera's HDMI port can place mechanical stress on the HDMI connector during camera movement. CMR-related testing specifically recommends securing the transmitter rather than leaving it unsupported to reduce the risk of expensive port or connector damage.
The Blackbird stabilizer can be pushed out of balance by wind, producing unwanted camera movement. Increasing its adjustable gimbal friction can reduce sensitivity, but strong wind remains an operational limitation of this type of handheld stabilizer.
Blackbird units have been criticized for relatively high gimbal panning friction. Excessive friction can impede smooth pan movement and make consistently fluid stabilized shots more difficult.
Blackbird users can experience persistent unwanted roll or side-to-side movement, particularly while learning to operate and balance the stabilizer. Incorrect balance, operator input, and insufficient practice can all contribute to visible rolling in footage.
The Blackbird camera platform can tilt when the operator accelerates or comes to a stop. The operator must compensate through technique and careful balance to prevent this fore-and-aft movement from appearing in footage.
Incorrect vertical drop time, horizontal balance, counterweight placement, or gimbal-friction settings can prevent the Blackbird from stabilizing correctly. The system requires careful adjustment, and changes to the camera configuration can require rebalancing.
CMR Radian and Connex configurations depend on external or attached battery/power systems, so depleted, switched-off, disconnected, or inadequately secured power can take the transmitter or receiver offline. CMR's Connex Mini battery is rated for roughly five hours of operation, making battery state and charging part of system reliability.
