Buchla repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

Buchla U.S.A. is an American boutique electronic musical-instrument manufacturer carrying forward the work of synthesizer pioneer Don Buchla, whose Buchla & Associates operation began in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1960s. Buchla became one of the foundational manufacturers of modular electronic instruments and developed an approach to synthesis notably different from conventional keyboard-oriented synthesizers. Modern Buchla produces the 200e modular system, 200 Classic Reissue modules, Music Easel, Easel Command, touch controllers, powered cabinets and related electronic performance instruments, while maintaining and reissuing historically important Buchla designs. The brand is especially known for experimental sound design, complex oscillators, low-pass gates, touch-controlled interfaces, banana-patch connections and its influential "West Coast" approach to modular synthesis. Buchla remains positioned at the high-end, specialist end of the synthesizer market, serving professional musicians, composers, sound designers and modular-synthesis enthusiasts.

2 Most Seen Failures:

Oscillator Pitch Drift / Tuning Instability

208/208C, 259e, Music Easel, and related oscillator circuits can develop unstable pitch, poor tuning consistency, or frequency drift as components age or calibration changes. Program-card firmware and calibration problems can also cause or worsen tuning drift.

Capacitive Touch Keyboard Malfunction

218 and 218e touch keyboards can develop individual keys that fail to trigger, trigger intermittently, produce incorrect pressure values, or respond unpredictably. Problems may originate from the capacitive sensing circuitry, grounding, calibration, connectors, or controller electronics.

Firmware Corruption / Module Boot Failure

200e modules can become erratic, fail to initialize normally, lose functionality, or require firmware reprogramming following corrupted or incompatible firmware. Mixing incompatible firmware generations within a 200e system can also produce improper system operation.

Preset Storage / Recall Failure

206e, 225e, Program Manager, and other preset-enabled Buchla systems can fail to correctly save or recall knob and switch parameters. Common causes include firmware issues, conflicting module IDs, memory-card problems, communication faults, or failures in the preset-management circuitry.

Slider / Potentiometer Intermittency

Music Easel and other control-dense Buchla hardware can develop noisy, intermittent, dead, or erratic sliders and potentiometers from wear, contamination, oxidation, or mechanical deterioration. The result can include parameter jumping, dead control ranges, or controls that no longer track their panel positions correctly.

Low-Pass Gate / Vactrol Degradation

292-series modules, Music Easel dynamics sections, and other vactrol-based Buchla circuits can develop channels with abnormal response, excessive bleed, reduced output, sluggish behavior, or channels that fail to open fully. Aging optocouplers/vactrols and surrounding analog circuitry are common repair targets.

Oscillator CV / Frequency Tracking Calibration Failure

259e and other oscillator modules can develop inaccurate response to frequency controls, CV multipliers, or modulation controls. Buchla provides factory-calibration procedures specifically for incorrect multiplier and frequency-control tracking.

MIDI / USB Communication Failure

208C, Easel Command, 218e V3, 225e, and other digitally interfaced Buchla hardware can experience missing MIDI notes, clock/arpeggiator problems, USB communication failures, or incorrect MIDI-to-CV behavior. Firmware revisions have specifically addressed MIDI handling, clocking, pitch-CV overflow, and related communication faults.

Power / Backplane / Module Communication Failure

200e systems can exhibit modules that fail to power correctly, behave unpredictably, or stop communicating with other modules because of power-distribution, connector, backplane, or module-interface faults. Incorrect module installation or reversed/improper power connections can cause significant hardware damage.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
