Brainboxes repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

Brainboxes Limited is a UK designer and manufacturer of industrial communication and connectivity hardware used to connect factory equipment, control systems, computers, sensors, and legacy serial devices to modern industrial networks. Its product portfolio includes industrial Ethernet switches, serial-to-Ethernet device servers, remote industrial I/O modules, gateways/controllers, and USB and PCI/PCIe serial connectivity products. The company designs and manufactures its hardware in the UK and is particularly known for rugged industrial networking products, legacy-to-Ethernet connectivity, Industry 4.0 applications, long product lifecycles, and lifetime support/warranty offerings.

2 Most Seen Failures:

Serial Port Communication Failure

RS-232/RS-422/RS-485 ports may stop transmitting or receiving data because of failed serial transceivers, damaged port circuitry, grounding problems, or incorrect duplex operation. Brainboxes specifically recommends loopback testing when diagnosing persistent communication failures.

Ethernet Connectivity Failure

ES, ED, BB, and Ethernet-switch models may become unreachable, fail to respond to pings, or disappear from device-management software. Hardware causes can include failed Ethernet PHY circuitry, damaged RJ45 ports, power problems, or an unsuccessful device boot.

Power Input Failure

Brainboxes industrial devices may fail to power on because of problems in the DC input stage, terminal connections, polarity protection, or internal power-conversion circuitry. The BB-400 troubleshooting guidance specifically identifies no-power and abnormal power/startup conditions.

Firmware Boot Failure

Some Brainboxes controllers and Ethernet devices can fail during startup, leaving abnormal status LEDs or an inaccessible device. Brainboxes documents first-boot failures on the BB-400 and historical firmware crashes on Ethernet-to-serial products.

USB Detection or Enumeration Failure

USB-to-serial models may fail to appear correctly in Device Manager or repeatedly report installation/device errors. Persistent cases after driver reinstallation and testing on another computer can indicate failure of the USB interface, bridge controller, connector, or supporting circuitry.

PCIe Card Detection Failure

PX-series serial cards may not enumerate, may show Device Manager errors, or may stop exposing their COM ports. If reseating the board, changing PCIe slots, reinstalling drivers, and testing another PC do not resolve the issue, the card hardware or PCIe interface circuitry may be defective.

Digital or Analog I/O Channel Failure

ED-series remote-I/O units can develop individual input or output channels that remain inactive, give incorrect readings, or report input-error conditions. Likely hardware faults include damaged MOSFET output stages, protection components, analogue front-end circuitry, or terminal connections.

PoE Power Failure

PoE-capable Ethernet-to-serial devices and industrial switches may lose network-powered operation while other device functions remain intact. Typical hardware faults involve the PoE input, isolation circuitry, protection components, or DC-DC conversion stage.

COM Port Intermittent or Unavailable

Ethernet-to-serial devices may show COM ports that cannot be opened, disconnect unexpectedly, or become intermittently unavailable. Brainboxes documentation associates these symptoms with network/power state, device status, firmware issues, and serial-interface problems, while older firmware releases specifically addressed Raw TCP, RFC2217, half-duplex, and port-stability faults.

1 Acme Revival offers repair, service, and part rebuild opportunities for most Brainboxes devices.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
