Benchmark Media Systems repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

Benchmark Media Systems is a U.S. manufacturer of precision, high-performance audio electronics serving professional recording, broadcast, sound-reinforcement, and audiophile markets. Founded in the 1980s and based in Syracuse, the company designs and manufactures products including digital-to-analog converters, audio power amplifiers, headphone amplifiers, and preamplifiers. Benchmark is particularly associated with extremely low-noise, low-distortion and sonically transparent signal paths, with well-known products including the DAC1/DAC2/DAC3 converter families, AHB2 power amplifier, HPA4 headphone amplifier, and LA4 line amplifier. Its products are individually assembled and tested in Syracuse, and the company emphasizes measurement-driven engineering, reliability, and professional/studio-grade performance that also crosses into high-end home audio

2 Most Seen Failures:

Scratchy or Intermittent Volume Control

DAC1, DAC1 PRE, and DAC1 HDR units can develop noisy, scratchy, or intermittent output when the analog volume potentiometer becomes contaminated or worn. Channel output may momentarily distort or cut in and out while the knob is moved.

Left/Right Channel Imbalance

Older DAC1-family units can develop unequal output levels between channels, particularly when using the variable-output volume control. The problem may result from potentiometer tracking, calibration drift, or faults in the analog output stage.

USB Input Not Recognized

DAC1 USB and DAC2-series units may stop being detected by a connected computer or fail to establish a stable USB audio connection. USB interface circuitry, firmware configuration, drivers, or the USB receiver section can be involved.

Intermittent or Missing Audio Output

Benchmark converters can exhibit complete or intermittent loss of one or both analog output channels while the unit otherwise appears powered and operational. Common fault areas include output-stage components, switching contacts, connectors, or local power rails.

DC Offset at Analog Output

DAC1-family hardware can develop excessive DC voltage on an analog output due to failures in coupling, buffer, or output-stage circuitry. Severe DC offset can cause protection problems downstream and should be investigated before reconnecting a power amplifier.

Power Supply Failure or Unstable Rails

Aging converters and amplifiers can develop startup problems, intermittent operation, or total loss of output when internal power-supply components deteriorate. Faulty capacitors, regulators, rectification components, or supply-control circuitry are typical areas requiring diagnosis.

Protection Mode / Amplifier Shutdown

AHB2 amplifiers may mute both outputs and enter PROTECT mode when excessive current, DC offset, abnormal power-supply conditions, clipping, or unsafe output-stage operation is detected. Persistent protection after eliminating external load problems can indicate an internal amplifier or power-supply fault.

Thermal Shutdown / Overtemperature Fault

AHB2 and other high-current Benchmark amplifiers monitor output-device and power-supply temperatures and can mute when safe thermal limits are exceeded. Repeated temperature faults under normal loads may indicate restricted cooling, abnormal bias/current draw, or failing power-stage components.

Headphone Output Protection or Channel Loss

Benchmark headphone-amplifier sections can mute, cycle, or lose output when overcurrent, a shorted headphone connection, or an internal amplifier fault activates protection circuitry. Output-jack wear, amplifier-stage faults, and associated relay/protection circuitry are common diagnostic areas.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
