Bastl Instruments is a Czech electronic musical-instrument manufacturer founded in 2013 and rooted in Brno's DIY electronic-music community. The company develops unconventional hardware for sound design, music production, experimentation, and live performance, including standalone analog and digital synthesizers, Eurorack modules and modular systems, samplers, effects processors, mixers, sequencers, and studio utilities. Bastl is particularly known for compact experimental instruments such as the Kastle, microGranny, Softpop 2, and Thyme+, as well as its distinctive hands-on approach to synthesis and modular sound design. Its philosophy remains strongly connected to DIY culture: the company offers kits and educational workshops and has made many of its schematics and software designs openly available for modification and experimentation.
Device will not power on, resets unexpectedly, glitches, or becomes unresponsive due to depleted batteries, incorrect battery polarity, inadequate supply voltage, or power-input faults. Battery-powered models such as Microgranny, Kastle, Kastle Drum, and Dude are particularly susceptible to power-related symptoms.
Microgranny units may display "CARD," fail to boot correctly, stop loading samples, or behave erratically when the microSD card becomes corrupted, improperly formatted, incompatible, or develops a poor connection. A damaged microSD socket can produce similar symptoms.
Thyme and Softpop SP2 can become nonfunctional or fail to boot normally when firmware loading or updating is interrupted or unsuccessful. Firmware re-flashing is a documented recovery procedure for affected units.
Kastle and Kastle Drum patch inputs can be electrically damaged when Eurorack or other out-of-range CV signals are connected directly to their unprotected mini patch points. Bastl specifically warns that external signals should be routed through the protected I/O connection.
Softpop SP2 can develop unstable or inaccurate pitch when its TRANSPOSE CV input loses calibration, sometimes influenced by the USB power source. Recalibration of the input is the documented corrective procedure.
Mixers and synthesizers may power normally yet produce no output or fail to pass incoming audio because of signal-path, jack, cable, switching, or internal circuit faults. Dude's official troubleshooting specifically identifies complete loss of audio throughput as a supported failure symptom.
Some Bastl devices operate from batteries but fail from an external adapter, or vice versa, because of polarity, connector, battery-contact, or power-selection problems. Dude requires a center-positive supply, while Kastle-family products can exhibit battery-specific power faults.
Softpop SP2 units can skip sequencer steps, fail to start playback, or exhibit unstable external synchronization because of firmware or configuration problems. Bastl specifically documented a sync-skipping problem corrected by a firmware update.
DIY Bastl hardware can fail completely or exhibit intermittent controls, LEDs, audio, or power because of cold solder joints, incorrectly oriented ICs or polarized components, improperly seated ICs, or misplaced jumpers. Bastl identifies these as common causes when completed DIY kits do not function.
