Ayre repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

Ayre Acoustics is an American high-end audio electronics manufacturer founded in 1993 by audio designer Charles Hansen. The company designs and builds audiophile-grade integrated amplifiers, stereo and monoblock power amplifiers, preamplifiers, phono stages, DACs/digital hubs, CD players and related source components. Ayre is particularly known for its fully balanced, zero-feedback circuit architecture, sophisticated power-supply designs, modular/upgradable products and an emphasis on long product life rather than rapid obsolescence. Its current portfolio includes the flagship R Series, 5 Series and modular 8 Series, with products such as the MX-R Twenty, VX-R Twenty, AX-5 Twenty, QX-5 Twenty, EX-8 2.0, QX-8 and CX-8. Ayre continues to design and hand-build its equipment in Colorado and occupies a relatively small, specialist position in the premium audiophile electronics market.

2 Most Seen Failures:

Disc Transport / Optical Drive Failure

Ayre CX-7/CX-7e, C-5/C-5xe, and other disc players can develop transport problems including failure to read discs, noisy operation, loading/ejection problems, or complete optical-drive failure. Ayre specifically offers replacement drives for its older CD/DVD players, and documented CX-7e units have required transport replacement.

Power Amplifier Rail Fuse Failure

Ayre V-series, VX-series, MX-R and related power amplifiers can blow internal power-supply rail fuses, commonly following excessive speaker loading, an output short, or an output-stage fault. Affected units may lose one channel or refuse normal operation even though some front-panel indications remain active.

Excessive DC Offset / Protection Shutdown

Ayre power amplifiers can develop excessive DC at the speaker outputs, causing the protection system to shut down or prevent the amplifier from entering normal operation. Aging adjustment components, output-stage faults, or drifting bias/offset circuitry can contribute to this condition.

Output Transistor / MOSFET Failure

Older Ayre power amplifiers can suffer shorted or failed output transistors, resulting in a dead channel, blown rail fuses, DC protection activation, or complete amplifier shutdown. Repairs can be complicated on older models because some original semiconductor types are discontinued and replacements may require careful matching and rebiasing.

Overheating / Thermal Protection

Ayre's high-bias amplifier designs can operate at substantial temperatures, and inadequate ventilation, excessive load, or an underlying output-stage problem can trigger thermal protection. The amplifier typically shuts down or returns to standby until its operating temperature falls.

Standby / Power-Up Failure

Ayre integrated amplifiers and other components can remain stuck in standby, appear partially powered but refuse to enter operate mode, or become completely unresponsive. Troubleshooting commonly centers on AC/main fuses, internal supply rails, control electronics, protection conditions, and power-supply faults.

Firmware / Control-System Malfunction

Digital Ayre products such as the QX-5, QX-8, EX-8, DX-5 and earlier CX-series players have had firmware-related control or playback faults. Documented issues include control-circuit bugs, sample-rate switching pops, slow or failed digital-input locking, disc compatibility problems, and playback freezing.

USB / Digital Input Recognition Failure

Ayre DACs and digital hubs can experience USB or network/digital-interface problems in which a computer or source no longer recognizes the device, audio will not start, or particular formats and sample rates fail. Causes can include firmware, driver conflicts, USB-interface electronics, network-module problems, or digital receiver circuitry.

Display / Front-Panel Control Failure

Ayre preamplifiers, integrated amplifiers, DACs, and digital hubs rely on front-panel display/control electronics that can develop blank displays, frozen controls, incorrect indications, or failure to respond to buttons or remote commands. Depending on the model, faults may originate in the display/control board, its firmware, local power supplies, or communication circuitry.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
