Audio Research repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

End Use Segment

Audio Research Corporation is a U.S. high-end audio manufacturer founded in 1970 by William Z. “Bill” Johnson and is widely associated with the development of the modern high-end home-audio market. The company designs and hand-builds premium audiophile electronics in Minnesota, particularly vacuum-tube power amplifiers, preamplifiers, integrated amplifiers, phono stages, and related source components, while also producing selected solid-state amplification products. Audio Research is especially known for its tube-based Reference-series equipment, discrete circuit designs, extensive hand assembly and testing, and an engineering philosophy centered on high-fidelity music reproduction rather than mass-market consumer electronics.

2 Most Seen Failures:

Output Tube Failure

6550, KT88, KT120, and KT150 output tubes can weaken, become noisy, lose emission, or internally arc, causing loss of output, distortion, excessive bias current, or amplifier shutdown. Tube failure is particularly common in heavily used or poorly ventilated Audio Research power amplifiers.

Cathode and Plate Resistor Failure

An arcing or shorted output tube can burn open its associated cathode or plate resistor, leaving one tube with zero bias current or causing a channel to become noisy or inoperative. This failure is documented across several Audio Research tube-amplifier designs.

Power Supply Capacitor Failure

Electrolytic reservoir and filter capacitors deteriorate with age and heat, producing hum, unstable supply voltages, weak output, intermittent operation, or complete power failure. Older D-series, SP-series, and other vintage Audio Research models are especially susceptible.

Blown Fuse or Protection Fuse

Output-tube faults, rectifier problems, electrical surges, or excessive current can open the mains, microprocessor, or individual tube-protection fuses. The unit may become completely dead, lose a channel, or refuse to leave protection until the underlying fault is corrected.

Tube Socket Contact Failure

Heat and oxidation can weaken tube-socket contacts, producing intermittent operation, crackling, noise, erratic bias, or a dead channel. Older amplifiers may require socket cleaning, retensioning, or complete socket replacement.

Bias Circuit Failure

Aging bias components, failed resistors, defective tubes, or regulator faults can cause incorrect or unstable output-tube bias. Symptoms include excessive tube current, zero bias on one tube, distortion, overheating, shortened tube life, or repeated tube failures.

High-Voltage Regulator Failure

Regulator tubes, zener diodes, resistors, or related high-voltage supply components can fail and remove or destabilize screen and B+ voltages. Affected amplifiers may power up with glowing tubes yet produce little or no audio output.

Noisy or Worn Volume Control

Mechanical volume potentiometers in older Audio Research preamplifiers can develop oxidized or worn tracks, causing crackling during adjustment, intermittent signal, and left-to-right channel imbalance. Severe wear can require replacement rather than cleaning.

Oxidized Switch and Control Contacts

Input selectors, toggle switches, relays, and other signal-path contacts can oxidize with age, resulting in intermittent channels, noise, signal dropouts, or controls that work only when moved repeatedly. Cleaning or replacement is commonly required on older preamplifiers and line stages.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
