Apricorn is a U.S. data-security hardware manufacturer founded in 1983 that specializes in hardware-encrypted external storage devices, particularly its Aegis family of USB flash drives, portable SSD/HDD drives, and high-capacity desktop storage. Its distinguishing technology is a software-free approach in which PIN authentication and AES-256 encryption are performed entirely within the storage device rather than by software on the host computer. Apricorn is particularly known for keypad-authenticated, FIPS-validated secure drives used by government, defense, healthcare, finance, education, critical infrastructure, and other organizations handling regulated or sensitive data. The company also has a history of developing products and patented technologies on an OEM basis for other computer manufacturers.
The device shows no LED activity and the keypad remains unresponsive when connected. Common hardware causes include insufficient USB power, a failed power adapter, a damaged cable or connector, or an internal power-circuit fault.
The operating system does not detect or mount the device after it has been unlocked. This can result from USB-interface failure, controller malfunction, an incompatible port or cable, or corrupted storage configuration.
The drive repeatedly disconnects, reconnects, or disappears during file transfers. Worn connectors, damaged integrated cables, unstable power, or a failing USB bridge/controller commonly produce this behavior.
One or more keypad buttons fail to register, making PIN entry or configuration unreliable. Wear, contamination, damaged button contacts, or failure of the keypad/control board may be responsible.
A known PIN is repeatedly rejected, or the device enters a brute-force lockout state after multiple unsuccessful attempts. A complete reset may restore device operation, but it destroys the encryption key and all stored data.
The device fails its startup security check and displays an abnormal or continuously flashing LED sequence. This indicates a possible fault in the encryption controller, secure firmware, keypad electronics, or another monitored security component.
The device unlocks but produces read errors, write errors, missing files, or complete loss of storage access. Failed NAND flash, an exhausted SSD, damaged hard-drive media, or a malfunctioning internal storage controller may be responsible.
File operations run unusually slowly, pause indefinitely, or fail before completion. Degrading storage media, repeated error correction, USB link problems, thermal instability, or controller faults can reduce performance.
The device is detected but cannot be initialized, partitioned, formatted, or used to complete a disk-cloning operation. Likely causes include damaged partition data, source-drive errors, capacity or sector-format incompatibility, or failure of the storage or adapter controller.
