Ambient Recording is a Munich-based specialist OEM of professional location-sound and synchronization equipment used primarily in film and television production. With more than 30 years in the professional sound-engineering market, the company develops and manufactures specialized equipment including its well-known Lockit timecode and synchronization systems, QuickPole carbon-fiber boom poles, Soundfish hydrophones, microphone power supplies, audio/timecode cables, adapters, and other production-audio accessories. Ambient is particularly known for its timecode technology and rugged field-production equipment, developing many products around the practical requirements of production sound professionals. Its portfolio has grown to more than 100 specialized solutions, with products designed around reliable synchronization, high-quality location audio, and metadata workflows for film and broadcast production.
Lockit-family units can report TC/Sync errors, lose an external timecode source, or fail to maintain synchronization. Incorrect frame-rate/sync configuration, interrupted connections, or removal of the Lockit from the camera can result in drifting or inconsistent production timecode.
Lockit, NanoLockit, TinyLockit, MasterLockit, and slate products can experience low-battery conditions or loss of operation when their primary power source is depleted or interrupted. Power loss during critical operations such as firmware updates can leave a unit requiring service.
Lockit-family hardware contains an internal backup battery used to preserve the real-time clock when the main battery is removed. Once this battery is depleted, the unit stops reliably holding time-of-day information while unpowered.
ACN-equipped Lockits can lose communication with the C-Jam master or fail to receive expected network synchronization. Radio interference, mismatched ACN channels, loss of the master device, or configuration problems can cause devices to become unsynchronized.
Lockit-family devices can become unusable or require service when a firmware update fails or power is interrupted during installation. Certain historical MasterLockit firmware releases also caused loss of OLED status indication and prevented access to the unit's web interface.
NanoLockit units have historically been susceptible to incorrect re-jamming under certain configurations, including use with a bi-directional power cable. Firmware updates were released specifically to correct this behavior.
QuickPole locking mechanisms can lose holding force as sweat, skin oils, dirt, or other contamination accumulates on the tubes and clamping rings. The result is a pole section that slips, rotates, or fails to lock tightly under load.
On older QuickPole mechanisms, excessive loosening can displace the locating pin from the compression-ring slot. Tightening the lock afterward can bend or break the pin, causing locking or intersegmental-rotation problems.
The threaded 3/8-inch mounting tip and carbon-fiber pole segments can become damaged through impact, wear, or heavy use. Damaged tips may require replacement, while cracked or otherwise compromised carbon sections generally require replacement of the affected segment.
