ALM Busy Circuits repair, service, and parts

Acme Revival is an independent repair network that operates separately from the manufacturers whose devices we service. Our independence enables a repair model that exists beyond manufacturer-controlled strategies, while preserving the ability to work with manufacturers where appropriate.

ALM/Busy Circuits is a UK boutique audio-electronics OEM specializing primarily in Eurorack modular synthesizer hardware. Founded by designer Matthew Allum after developing the original Pamela’s Workout clock module, the company has grown to offer nearly 50 modules plus standalone hardware and software. Its portfolio spans clocking and modulation sources, oscillators and synth voices, sequencers, samplers, filters, effects processors, mixers, interfaces and expansion modules. ALM is particularly known in the modular-synth market for the Pamela’s Workout family, along with products such as Squid Salmple, MFX and its Akemie-series synthesis modules. Its products emphasize compact hardware, hands-on control, creative functionality and distinctive implementations of both analog and digital synthesis technologies.

2 Most Seen Failures:

[Module Fails to Power On]

Module does not boot, boots only intermittently, or requires repeated power cycling. Common causes include inadequate startup current, an overloaded/faulty Eurorack power supply, a bad ribbon cable, or a poor bus-board connection.

[Module Freezes or Crashes]

Digital ALM modules can lock up, become unresponsive, or crash during operation. Firmware problems or corrupted settings are common first suspects, with ALM recommending firmware updates and a factory reset before hardware service.

[Intermittent or Strange Module Behavior]

The module operates unpredictably, with controls, outputs, or digital functions behaving abnormally despite otherwise powering normally. Power-supply problems, firmware state, or corrupted settings are frequent causes.

[Firmware Update Failure]

The module fails to recognize or install a firmware image, particularly on USB-equipped products such as Squid Salmple. Incorrect filenames, incompatible USB media/cables, files placed in the wrong location, or an incorrect update procedure are common causes.

[USB Connection Not Recognized]

A computer fails to detect the module when connected for firmware updating. Charge-only USB cables, hubs, cable/connector problems, or failure to correctly enter update mode are common causes.

[Oscillator Pitch Tracking / Calibration Failure]

Oscillator pitch becomes inaccurate or fails to track 1V/octave correctly across its range. The oscillator generally requires recalibration when tuning becomes inconsistent.

[Controls or Buttons Become Intermittent]

Frequently operated buttons, encoders, or channel controls can become unreliable, requiring repeated presses or producing inconsistent responses. Owner reports include channel-button deterioration on heavily used Squid Salmple units.

[Abnormally Low or Missing Audio Output]

A channel or module produces unexpectedly weak, absent, or inconsistent audio despite apparently operating normally. Reports are particularly associated with sampler output levels, although gain configuration and sample level should be ruled out before assuming a hardware fault.

[Trigger / Clock Input Misbehavior]

Triggers or clocks produce double triggering, incorrect timing, missed events, or apparent synchronization errors. Signal width/level, PPQN configuration, upstream switching circuitry, or input-conditioning problems can mimic an actual input hardware failure.

1 Acme Revival offers repair, service, and part rebuild opportunities for most ALM Busy Circuits devices.

Connect with a technician.

  1. 1 Repairs are performed on a best-effort basis. Acme Revival utilizes a network of sophisticated technicians and engineers with diverse service offerings; despite this, factors that influence the repair outcome may ultimately prove unsuccessful. Acme Revival makes no claim that it can, guarantee a repair before your device is sent in for diagnostic evaluation; even then, repair and diagnostic work are not mutually exclusive. Despite well-intentioned quoting, repairs may still prove unsuccessful.
