Canton TYPE-G Slit Lamp

A good all-around ‘Zeiss-Style’ slit lamp that probably won’t last as long as some other more expensive models.

Overview

Of all the slit lamps in the world, the Canton TYPE-G does not necessarily stand out among the others. These days, the likes of Marco and Haag-Streit make truly great microscopes that last forever and connect state-of-the-art imaging systems to EHR systems. They look great too- with shiny coatings and lightweight materials that glisten in manufacturer’s studio lighting against spaceship-esque exam room aesthetics. The Canton TYPE-G is not, however, these systems (nor it is trying to be). It does not have the tither and dither and pizzazz that Swiss or Japanese factories have set forth. It is however two things: 1). Sufficient ; and 2). Affordable. Kind of like the Toyota Corolla of the automotive world– the Canton is reliable, attainable, and underwhelming.  You’ll note on first use that the joystick feels a bit ‘cheap’ and the chin rest adjustment is far too lightweight to be real metal. The power supply switch looks fairly generic and even the Canton logo was a bit “crooked” on our demo unit. Despite these issues the TYPE-G is wonderfully smooth on its base, easy to maneuver and dial and turn- and best of all has quality optics you’d expect of a much more expensive system. It is, for lack of a better word, sufficient and affordable.
