Plastic frame design around the screen is bizarre, plastic is prone to staining, neutralization target could be larger.

Despite an odd screen layout and design, the NIDEK LM-990A is well versed and long-lasting.

Overview

The LM-990A reminds me of one of those oversized pictures frames that houses a piece of paper (in type size 9) that you can only read up-close. It has this ridiculously large plastic frame which inside sits a small LCD screen that while “good-enough” just wasn’t good design- even during the time it was built. On this plastic frame also sits these round buttons that have some movement when pressed and unlike other lensometers from this era there are 8 buttons instead of 5 which is most likely why this frame exists. Regardless of our first impression, the NIDEK LM-990A does exactly what its supposed to do and has an internal structure that is better thought-out than others the LM-990A rivals. A side note as well, the LM-990A seems to be more susceptible to trauma than most– probably because of that oversized screen frame?
